Sony A7s DSLR

The Sony A7s is a remarkable 4k Ultra HD DSLR from Sony. Available to rent in Central London from The Gear Factory.

The new wave of UHD DSLR cameras continues to impress with the highly rated Sony A7s. This camera is so good in low light it could change how you shoot forever! Built to compete with the Panasonic Lumix GH4, the Sony A7s boasts technical specs as impressive as the pictures it produces.

There’s a 12.2MP 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch 921K-dot tilting LCD monitor, an XGA 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, Sony’s BIONZ X image processor, fast intelligent 25-point AF system, NFC, WiFi and 4K and Full HD video recording in XAVC S.

So you can shoot full frame with stills lenses, or with a PL adapter and our great cinematic Canon K35s which cover Full Frame, or you can still switch to Super 35mm APS-C size and use cinema lenses, or stills lenses with a Metabones Speed Booster.

You can use regular smart EF adapters, or the ones made by Metabones (doesn’t have to be a Speed Booster). Or use an Arri PL adapter to use our full range of cinema and classic lenses.

You should be aware though that all adapters that translate Sony lens protocol to Canon lens protocol can be a bit difficult sometimes as the two protocols are talking to each other. You may need to boot the camera with the lens off and put it on after. Metabones adapters are a bit better than the cheaper ones in this regard.

Like most cameras in this range, the rolling shutter means fast panning motion can be jelly-like, but for more sedate images in low light this is an amazing camera.

We personally prefer not to use the S-log modes as this has a minimum ISO of 3200 which is very high, and the 8-bit recorded image does not stretch out as well as a 10 bit image would. We prefer the cine gamma settings.

Standard – Still = 100 – 102400, Movie = 200 – 102400
Expandable – Still = 50 – 409600, Movie = 200- 409600
Some crazy ISO numbers there and amazingly a lot of them are actually usable.

HD = 60p, 601, 50p, 50i, 30p, 25p, 24p.
4K = 30p, 25p, 24pOTHER FEATURES
