Panasonic GH5 Lumix Camera
It was feeling like the Sony cameras were beating Panasonic in the mirrorless compacts with the updated Sony A7s Mk2. But the Panasonic GH5 release means they are back in the game. Stabilisation on the chip, better low-light performance, better processing, 4K at 60p 150mbps and of course 10 bit 4.2.2 output and internal recording (the Sony’s are only 8-bit).
It is of course MFT mount, which is not an area where people get really excited about the lenses available, but of course you can add adapters to nearly anything, including the Metabones Speedbooster to get to EF, and an Arri PL adapter to use even anamorphic lenses like our Lomos.
Worth noting the HDMI connector is now full-size, which may prove to be a bit more reliable (not that HDMI is a pro connector in any way).
The optional V-log curve has been added.
Frame rates are up to 60p in 4K, up to 180fps in HD 1080.
Future updates may allow for even higher bit rates at regular speeds. Already having 10 bit allows you to use cine gamma and stretch it out in post without as much worry of banding that you’d get from 8 bit footage.
For shooting pro audio there is an XLR adapter that is far less unwieldy than the old YHGA unit.

Panasonic’s innovative DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology is constantly evolving and its just got even better. DFD allows the LUMIX GH5 to calculate focal lens movement by comparing depth of field values of two images at incredibly high speed. By combining the AF drive with a maximum read speed of 480 fps, the LUMIX GH5 can achieve ultra-high-speed Auto Focus in up to 0.05 seconds* and 9 fps burst shooting with AFC (* 12 fps burst shooting with AFS). A newly adopted motion detector accurately tracks fast moving subjects, and enables smooth 4K PHOTO/VIDEO & 6K PHOTO recording.
