Description

Blackmagic Video Assist 4K 7″ screen and recorder

Available to hire at Gear Factory London the Blackmagic Video Assist 4k 7” screen and recorder, a cost-effective competitor to the well-known Atomos Shogun.

Blackmagic continues to dominate the prosumer and DSRL market with this impressive monitor and recorder. The bright 7inch screen makes it easier to focus and compose the shots you want than using the built-in LCD screens on small cameras and DSLRs.

It records at HD 1080p and up to Ultra HD at 2160p30. It has both SDI and HDMI inputs which make it compatible with any camera from DSLRs and digital film cameras to older tape based cameras – allowing you to record straight to file. With 10 bit 4:2:2 ProRes or DNxHD you can record at the same quality used in major motion pictures and prime-time television. With a 135-degree viewing angle and a rotating image, it’s versatile in how it can be used; as a viewfinder, director’s monitor or rigged to jibs and stabilisers.

It records to SD card and both these and the batteries are hot-swappable. Although SD cards are small, portable and relativity cheap it does mean you will have a lower capacity over something like an SSD. We supply our kit with the latest 256GB Lexar UHS-II cards and reader so you can record in 4k without any issue. Blackmagic has included two SD card slots on the Video Assist 4k and the recording switches over automatically once the first card is full. Recording can also be triggered by the HDMI or SDI inputs, meaning that once you hit record on the camera, you know it’s also recording on the Video Assist monitor. Note though that while HDMI in and outputs are full size, the SDIs are not, so adapters will be needed in most cases.

The Blackmagic Video Assist 4K also records audio and with an equivalent input noise floor of -128dBV it might a better option than recording audio in camera, especially for some DSLR models. It boasts two low noise balanced analog mini XLR inputs with 48V phantom power. The audio is recorded directly into the video file so there is not separate syncing required. It only supports mini XLR inputs so again adapters will be needed in most cases.

It can run from mains power or supports two batteries for ultimate flexibility.

All in all, it’s a great piece of kit, lightweight and durable with some great features. A useful addition to your shoot.

We recommend pairing it with a stabiliser, like a Ronin or MoVi and a DSLR or other cameras in the Blackmagic range.
